Uninsured Cancer Patients Not Getting The Care They Need
A new study by Dr. Kenneth Thorpe and Dr. David Howard at Emory! University in Atlanta concludes that 1 in 10 cancer patients under age 65 are not receiving the care they need because they do not have health insurance.

The study found that these uninsured patients, many of whom are Hispanic, receive about half the number of prescription drugs, hospital services and other services as those with health insurance and pay nearly twice as much in out-of-pocket expenses. Click here to learn more.

CancerConsultants.com
In order to receive optimal cancer care, patients and families need to be aware of new management options as they become available. More importantly, understanding the results of recent cancer clinical trials evaluating cancer therapies and supportive care strategies can educate patients about the management of their care and empower patients’ discussions with their primary cancer physicians regarding management of their cancer. While the results of hundreds of clinical trials are published monthly, very few trials immediately change cancer management. The purpose of Cancer News is to provide patients and their families with any new medical information that could affect cancer management decisions. Click here for more information.

Wall Street Journal Article
The Wall Street Journal had an article (summarized below) on pages B1 & B4 on May 20th, 2003.

"Genentech Drug excites industry with results of cancer trials - the drug Avastin markedly improved overall survival for colon cancer patients when combined with standard chemotherapy in a large clinical trial. The findings are a major boost for a treatment strategy called antiangiogenesis, aimed at killing tumors by cutting off their blood supply."

As of August 19, the following sites have received IRB approval and are ready to enroll patients:
  • Witchita CCOP/Via Christi Regional Medical Center, Witchita, KS
  • New York Hospital - Cornell University Medical Center, New York, NY
  • University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma City, OK
  • Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Seattle, WA

Wine Joins the Fight to End Colon Cancer
by Priscilla Savary, CCNetwork

First chocolate, then raspberries, and now wine! Could you ask for a better combination of foods to help you fight colon cancer? (Okay, you need to toss broccoli in there for good measure...)

Researchers have, for years, been examining hundreds of plant extracts hoping to find some that can be effective against cancer. The National Cancer Institute has at least one office entirely devoted to finding new plants and plant extracts in the search to prevent and cure cancer. Recently, a chemical called resveratrol has been isolated in grape skins.

Resveratrol is found in many foods, but the best source turns out to be the skins and seeds of grapes. Apparently this chemical helps to defend the grape against bad weather. It was tested in the laboratory and found effective in three stages of cell changes in cancer - initiation, promotion and progression.

Dr. Heinz-Josef Lenz, one of the earliest researchers to study this compound with colon cancer, (USC/Norris, research oncologist) found resveratrol may block activation of genes involved in the initiation of cell death, which may explain how resveratrol can prevent cancer development. Minnie Holmes-McNary, a nutritional biologist at the University of North Carolina's medical school in Chapel Hill is another researcher focusing in on wine and cancer prevention and treatment. She is part of a team of researchers who's studies indicate that resveratrol acts as sort of an antibiotic against fungus in grapes.

Some of the genes affected by resveratrol may increase sensitivity of tumors to anticancer drugs. Because of this work is being done to test the combination of resveratrol and chemotherapy in clinical trials.

As with all things, before you decide to drink wine during your treatment period, consult your oncologist.

Annie Appleseed Project
Study of Beneficial Grape Compounds
Published research on resveratrol -- a phytonutrient found in fresh grapes -- has nearly tripled in the past two years, indicating strong interest in the health benefits of this compound. Resveratrol, found mainly in the skins of grapes, is noted for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and its potential to prevent cancer and heart disease. Click hear to read more.
