Gas, Odor

Gas in the Digestive Tract
Website: http://www.niddk.nih.gov/health/digest/pubs/gas/gas.htm

Foods that produce gas in one person may not cause gas in another. Doctors may tell people to eat fewer foods that cause gas. Digestive enzymes, such as lactase supplements, actually help digest carbohydrates and may allow people to eat foods that normally they could not.

Suggestions for Coping with Anal Burn/Radiation Burn

For hard to heal sores.

Happy Hiney:
2 oz. zinc oxide ointment
2 ml. mineral oil
2 ml. compound benzoin tincture

The only over-the-counter product that is similiar is Calmoseptine. Drug Emporium is one of the few drug stores that carry this.

Aquaphor w/Lidocaine.- ask your oncologist and your pharmacist about having this mixed up for you

Rx for 5% Lidocaine
Apply this directly to the sphincter muscle. Then I lie down with possibly a mild pain killer until it lets up.
Continuing to sit on my bottom or stand for any length of time will aggravate the problem. Contains lidocaine
. You can put some just inside the anal canal before a bowel movement and that may help.
Bill LidaMantle

Toilet paper has chemicals impregnated in it to make it more absorbent, which may dry the anus if used more than once a day. (I guess they think everyone only goes once a day).

There are many new "flushable" wet wipes on the market now, just find one you are not sensitive to.

Preparation H cooling gel may help.

Tucks are another possibility.

Buy small amounts of any of these until you find what works for you

One patient used cold (refrigerated) wet cotton balls.

Vitamin E in the gel capsules or in the liquid form. However, the capsules are easier to keep sterile since most of us don't wash our hands before we pour a lotion onto them and therefore can easily transfer germs into the bottle.

Hand held bidets are available. Check the internet for purchasing. They are pretty affordable and avoid the wiping and making things more raw.

As with any suggestions, please consult with your doctor before trying any of these. This should not be construed to be medical advice. It is information provided through the experience of other patients.

Supplements which may interfere with Camptosar chemotherapy

  • Curcumin
  • St John's Wort
  • Garlic
  • Ginseng
  • Ginko Biloba

  • Journal of the National Cancer Institute 2002;94:1247-1249, 1187-1188 suggesting that the popular herbal St. John's Wort interferes with Camptosar chemotherapy (weakening its effectiveness):

"irinotecan first enters the body as an inactive molecule. The molecule then needs to be turned into a compound known as SN-38 in order to exert its anti-cancer effects. However, before that activation occurs, liver enzymes can step in and change the chemical properties of irinotecan, and also render it less able to destroy cancer cells. Treatment with St. John's wort can increase the levels of one of these particular enzymes, known as CYP3A4".

The article goes on to say that "other substances that either raise or lower levels of CYP3A4 may also affect the ability of chemotherapy drugs to kill cancer cells, substances which include garlic supplements, ginkgo biloba, ginseng, and kava". See also this article from the BMJ . While St. John's Wort INCREASES the level of CYP3A4, Piperine DECREASES these levels as shown in this Abstract PMID 12130727 . This could potentially lead to increased Camptosar toxicity.

There have also been suggestions in the medical literature that Curcumin might interfere with Camptosar chemotherapy.

Supplements which may be associated with antiplatelet/increased bleeding.

You should exercise caution when taking these with anticoagulants such as Warfarin - and you should discontinue these several weeks before any surgery (discuss with your doctor!). May enhance effects of anticoagulant medications (eg, warfarin) and potentiate bleeding.

  • Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus)
  • Bromelain, from pineapple stem (Ananas comusus)
  • Cayenne (Capsicum annuum)
  • Coleus/forskolin (Coleus forskohlii)
  • Flaxseed oil (Linum usitatissimum)
  • Feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium)
  • Garlic (Allium sativum)
  • Ginger (Zingiber officinale)
  • Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba)
  • Ginseng, American (Panax quinquefolium)
  • Green tea (Camellia sinensis)
  • Meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria)
  • Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca)
  • Poplar (Populus spp)
  • Supplements associated with laxative properties

  • Aloe vera gel
  • Aloe vera leaf
  • Buckthorn bark and berry (Rhamnus frangula, Frangula alnus)
  • Cascara sagrada (Rhamnus purshiana)
  • Fennel seed (Foeniculum vulgare)

  • Rhubarb root (Rheum palmatum)
  • Senna leaf and fruit (Cassia senna)
  • Slippery elm (Ulmus rubra)
  • Supplements associated with coagulant/anticoagulant properties

Coagulant - May inhibit effects of anticoagulant medications (eg, warfarin).
  • Barberry (Berberis vulgaris)
  • Oregon grape root (Berberis aquifolium, Mahonia aquifolium)
  • Shepherd's purse (Capsella buisa-pastoris)

  • Anticoagulant - Exhibits anticoagulant activity and may enhance effects of anticoagulant medications (eg, warfarin) and potentiate bleeding
  • Chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile)
  • Dong quai (Angelica sinensis)
  • Horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum)

  • Herbals, natural substances, vitamins, supplements:

Before taking any of these items it is important to check with your doctor. The classic example of why this is so important is - Garlic, Gingko and Ginseng - which are blood all thinners.

And if you think about it....you wouldn't be adding herbals, natural substances, vitamins and supplements if you didn't believe that they were have an effect on your body. Make sure you clear with your doctor that the possible effect won't lessen your chemotherapies effectivess.

Curcumin, a polyphenol derived from Curcuma spp., has shown wide-ranging chemopreventive activity in preclinical carcinogenic models, in which it inhibits cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 at the transcriptional level. COX-2 has been implicated in the development of many human cancers.
